I was trying to recall the exact time when my affinity for autumn foliage evolved into a borderline obsession. The earliest memories seemed to center around the foliage in my neighbourhood. Sydney is not known for maple or deciduous trees, but the city does have clusters of maple trees in parks and on some streets. Japan is known for its autumn foliage, especially Kyoto, when the stunning maples turned into shades of fiery crimson and orange. It happens that Japan is another obsession of mine. I guess two obsessions can produce one perfect match. So on my last trip to Japan, I managed to witness autumn colours of epic proportion. Kodaiji 高台寺 was the first stop on my autumn colours itinerary. It seemed like a good start given its vicinity to Kyoto station and it’s also one of the best spot for maple leaves viewing. Some facts – Kodaiji is a temple and belonged to the Zen sect of Buddhism. It’s located in the Higashiyama District of Kyoto, the same area where you’ll find Kiyomizudera, probably the most impressive temple in Japan.
