This is how I describe the setting of our section Christmas lunch. Quirky decor with a mismatch of wooden wine crates, chicken wires, hanging crosses, Christmas inspired stockings, chandeliers of random sizes, huge cow hide chairs, deer head mounds and ceiling of overlapping wooden panelled that curved to form a wall behind a bar. This funky wine bar is tucked neatly in Surry Hills. It is The Winery. I’ve heard great things about this establishment and finally jump on a chance to sample its delights. The food menu is one-page simple, serving tapas style shared plates of savouries inspired by different cooking style. There are mains and desserts too, accompanied by a superb selection of beverage. While we were halfway through our Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc – the waiter came to us with our plates of delights: fresh oysters served in vinaigrette; stuffed roasted mushrooms; toasted bread with brandied chicken liver pate; pea & broad bean salad served with feta; and sausage roll made with veal and chorizo.
