The Hart and The Hunter – Los Angeles

I love getting travel tips from YouTube especially on great places to eat. A famous YouTuber from Hong Kong recommended The Hart and The Hunter on Melrose Ave, a last minute addition to my LA itinerary. LA was putting up a clear blue sky on a warm autumn afternoon, a very welcome change from the previous day with persistent overcast. It was a cheerful kind of day walking along Melrose Ave.  The murals and funky stores from vintage outlets to chic casual hairdressers reminded me of Newtown. By the time I reached The Hart and The Hunter I’ve already made another hot dog stop, so I wasn’t really hungry. I almost made it into a coffee-only stop given it’s late in the afternoon but decided to given in to my culinary curiosity with a lunch dish. On scanning the menu, I arrived the shrimp with rice grits, bacon, mushroom and scallion (spring onions) medley. It seemed light enough for two to share. Bills on Waikiki

To be honest, I was quite fine with percolated coffee in Hawaii. It was thin, weak, bland and reminded me of coffee served in hotels and conferences. I don’t really mind it that much. However, I do love to indulge in coffee that I easily took for granted living in Sydney, especially on longer-than-a-week escape. I do miss the foaminess, milkiness and aroma of a flat white. In a relax setting, a cup of great coffee and paper go a long way. In Waikiki, I did manage to find a good flat white in Bills, the same Bills Sydney from my own backyard. Bills is owned by Australian celebrated chef and cookbook author Bill Granger who probably produced the best breakfast in the world. Talented and always photographed with a captivating smile, his a culinary icon I would love to meet. I’ve always wanted to try Bills for a while and in fact there’s one close to home on Crown Street, but the queues are always long and the cafe is always crowded. So it was a joy …
